Oculoplastic Image screening

Oculoplastic before and after

What is Oculoplastic Surgery?

Oculoplastics, also known as oculofacial plastic surgery, is a specialized branch of ophthalmology that focuses on the medical and surgical care of the eyelids, tear ducts, orbit (eye socket), and adjacent facial structures. This field merges the precision of eye care with the aesthetic and reconstructive needs of the face.

How is Oculoplastics Used?

Oculoplastic specialists evaluate and treat a wide range of conditions that affect both the functionality and appearance of the eye area. Common diagnostic and treatment services include:

Medical & Surgical Applications:

  • Ptosis (drooping eyelid) correction
  • Dermatochalasis (excess eyelid skin) removal
  • Chalazion/Stye drainage
  • Eyelid reconstruction after trauma or cancer
  • Treatment of eyelid tumors, such as basal cell carcinoma
  • Tear duct surgery for blocked tear drainage
  • Management of orbital diseases, such as Graves' disease

Why is Oculoplastic Screening Important?

Oculoplastic screening plays a critical role in:

Early Detection of Disease

Many systemic or localized conditions (e.g., diabetes, skin cancers, thyroid eye disease) present early warning signs in the eye and facial region. Identifying these signs early can lead to better patient outcomes.

Enhancing Primary Care Services

Primary care clinics that incorporate oculoplastic evaluations can:

  • Improve diagnostic efficiency
  • Strengthen patient outcomes
  • Increase reimbursement through CPT codes like 92285 and 99451

Integrated Patient Care

Working with oculoplastic specialists through telehealth consults ensures that patients get expert evaluation without leaving their PCP’s office—saving time, reducing delays, and avoiding unnecessary referrals.
